CREATIVITY FACTS

Plato advises us, as a civilization, to appoint censors. He says that "great evil springs out of a fullness of nature rather than from a deficiency of nature, weak natures are scarcely capable of any very great good or very great evil."  He says that a civilization/city should ban a poet or artist. To "let him come to us and show us his art and praise and honor him as a rare and holy being. But then send him away to another city."

I have been involved in art for a lifetime. I taught it for thirty years. I know what a creative person is up against. Any and by any, I mean ALL civilized groups are against creativity. Their very essence is in stability and creativity is just the opposite. So no matter what they say about the word "creativity" they are against it. This means all political movements, all school systems, all religions. Their leaders will most often just flat lie to you. They lie because they actually know what it is. The leadership underlings don't lie but just have accepted the conditioning and pass it on to you.

A creative person will always (I do mean ALWAYS) find a flaw in his environment and try to fix it. Governments, Religions, and school systems will fight you tooth and nail. Creativity is not going to show up in text books, laws or religious doctrines because, as I stated earlier, their total and absolute intent is stability of the existing system.

This is what you have to deal with if you are a creative person. In the following pages I will tell you what it really is.

Creativity in a non civilized state is highly appreciated because the individual is reacting to his environment. He actually serves a purpose (but is NEVER appreciated) in a civilized state. His purpose is to see the flaws in the civilization and fix them. He is the only person that can do it because he is the only person that is looking. That is why life drawing and drawing from your environment are so important. The simple fact is that "if you don't have it in your mind, you cannot get it out". You can see this over and over with "unskilled" artist wannabes. Abstract art serves some purpose but is definitely not the most purposeful art. It's major purpose is to show what a wreck the human mind has been in since the beginning of the twentieth  century. Or as far as that goes what a wreck that civilization has been in since the beginning of the twentieth century. To make sure it is clear. You are not trying to destroy Civilization. You are trying to fix it.

Creativity Defined  Creativity is difficult to define because the word is used so loosely in contemporary civilization. It is much like defining the word "word". It means everything. However this is a functional Civilized definition.

Design Theory  Design is never defined in Art School. The instructors just teach all around it and hope you pick it up. This is the real definition and it is based on the spirit of what a Human is.

Gestalt  Gestalt has a very high place in understanding design and creativity. It is best defined here and contains an example.
